Righteousness is a state of spiritual sinlessness because, unlike the flesh, the holy spirit in us cannot sin and because God has given this to us. He has counted us as righteous because we have the faith of Abraham and Christ. We received our righteousness through God’s grace when we first believed. It is closely related to our justification and sanctification which comes at the new birth. This spiritual truth is in no way related to our works.–DMA
Rom 3:22 KJV – Even the righteousness of God [which is] by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference. Rom 4:5 KJV – But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
